Open Letter to the Advisory Council of the Order of Canada

Your Excellency, Governor General Jean,
Most esteemed and honourable Prime Minister Harper,
Madame Chief Justice McLachlin,
Esteemed Advisory Committee Members,



It has come to our family’s attention that Dr. Henry Morgentaler has been approved to receive the Order of Canada tomorrow, July 1st.

It is also our understanding that the appointment of the Order of Canada is to be a unanimous decision by the Committee.

Further, we have come to believe that traditional protocol which required unanimous approval was over-ruled thus forcing the Chancellery to accept a majority decision instead.

We are UTTERLY APPALLED that the man whose sole claim to fame is his practice of the unrepentant genocide of countless Canadians should receive this award. Surely this devalues Canada's highest civilian honour of the Order of Canada, both for past recipients and for those worthy of recognition in the future!

Although we realize, Madame Governor General and Mr. Prime Minister, that you do not control who is nominated for the Order of Canada, we strongly beseech you to publicly denounce this appointment, and bring to bear moral outrage and higher persuasion to the Committee to put a stop to this utterly disgusting and inappropriate appointment.
